We have also spread our activities into the rural sector, to support the needs of school children and assist in the welfare of rural women.

Self-Sufficiency

Our farms at Karapakkam and Sholinganallur, located 25 km outside Chennai aim at making us self-sufficient in terms of rice, vegetables and milk for the children.

Bio-farming

To protect our environment, we follow a program of bio-farming, utilizing organic fertilizers, and plant-based insect repellents. We use gobar-gas as a source of energy for cooking. An effluent treatment plant based on "Root-zone" technology is used to treat waste water for use in farming.

Helping village women

Village women are helped to start kitchen-gardens in order to enable them to earn and be economically self-sufficient.

Plant Nursery

A plant nursery was set up as an income generating project to aid the rural schools at Karapakkam. More than 100 plant species are grown here.

Textile Unit

Our textile-printing unit trains village women and rural youth in traditional batik designing and dyeing. We make lungis, bedspreads, pillow-covers, scarves and many other items.

The Camping Ground

The Dr. V.N. Sharma camping ground at Sholinganallur provides camping facilities for children to enjoy scouting and similar activities.
