Excavations at Attirampakkam.  Digging deep into South India's Prehistory.....

 

India has a rich and diverse archaeological heritage. From early prehistoric populations of the Lower Palaeolithic to the remains of our recent past:-every part of this country has a story to tell. Read more on our latest results on the age of the Acheulian levels at this site.

Our ongoing research programs in palaeoanthropology comprise investigations into the prehistoric archaeology of Tamil Nadu along the southeast coast of South India. Our excavations at Attirampakkam and field surveys in northern and southern parts of the state reveal new information on the earliest prehistoric populations of South Asia.  An essential part of our work is communicating research findings to children, teachers and local stakeholders.

Recent studies on the age of the Acheulian (Lower Palaeolithic) levels at the site of Attirampakkam show that India was occupied by prehistoric populations more than a million years ago.  Read more..
