South Asia has a rich and diverse prehistoric archaeological heritage, dating back to more than a million years. The most prolific clues to prehistoric behaviour and cognition are stone artefacts. This workshop introduces you to lithic technology and typology, and methods adopted for their analysis. The course includes lectures, experimental lithic knapping and tool-use, and observations of stone artefacts.

Dates and DeadlinesThe workshop will be held from January 23-29, 2018. The last date for application is October 30, 2017. Decisions will be conveyed to the applicants by November 10, 2017.

Eligibility:  Applicants must have completed their graduation in archaeology or anthropology, and should be currently enrolled in a university/research institute/museum. The course is also open to faculty.

Course Fees & Other Details: The course fee is Rs. 8000/-. This includes academic content, teaching, provision of raw materials required for knapping, teaching materials, as also lunch, and refreshments. The medium of instruction is English. Timings for the course are from 9 am to 5 pm. Participants will also be taken for a field visit to the Palaeolithic site of Attirampakkam (weather permitting).

Venue, Accommodation, Food and Transport:  The venue is at Sharma Centre for Heritage Education campus, No.4, School Street, Sholinganallore, Chennai 600119. This is located around 25 km from Central Station, Chennai. Selected candidates must arrange for their own stay, breakfast and dinner, as also transport to/from and within Chennai. Lunch and refreshments will be provided at the Centre.

Course Structure and Expected Outcomes: The workshop comprises modules that seek to introduce students to recent developments in South Asian prehistory. The focus will lie on introducing aspects of stone tool typology and technology through time, with an emphasis on lithic knapping, covering diverse cultural phases. The course includes theory, observation/handling of artefacts and experimental knapping. At the end of the course, the participant will be expected to: 1. obtain a grasp of key issues in South Asian prehistory and implications in terms of current global debates in the field; 2.understand basic principles involved in stone tool manufacture, and gain an understanding of varied reduction sequences; and 3.practise different methods employed in the study of lithic artefacts. A field trip to the Palaeolithic site of Attirampakkam will be organised (weather permitting).
